Before a fire becomes a reality, you need to look at your property with fire resistance in mind. There are three specific elements to consider to create a defensible space.
- You’ll want to construct your buildings using fire-resistant materials whenever possible, and be sure that any repairs/renovations also use fire-resistant materials.
- You’ll want to reduce the size or eliminate any natural or “public” land materials around your home that will fuel flames.
- Try to landscape using fire resistant plants. While there is no guarantee doing so will make your home entirely safe from a wildfire, working to meet these three points will increase your property’s chance of survival.
Let’s look at each in-depth.
